a weird world of fun and chaos hand-knitted by Anna Hrachovec

Craft artist Anna Hrachovec will unveil a hand-knitted installation made out of 200 balls of yarn (supplied by Cascade Yarns) and more than a million stitches.

In her first solo show, craft artist Anna Hrachovec stretches the possibilities of knitting as a medium to create an expansive and wacky landscape installation. Crash-landed aliens, rat-infested skyscrapers, giant ants, and everything else that comprises the 8-foot installation is entirely hand-knitted by the artist, who used 200 balls of yarn and more than a million stitches to make it all come to life. And just for fun, the piece includes a working model train - converted into a silly knitted monster, of course!

Some of the elements in the piece are based on designs in Anna's 2010 book of knitted toy patterns, Knitting Mochimochi.

Anna divides her time between designing the patterns that she shares with an enthusiastic crafting community and creating more complex one-off knitted pieces for exhibition.

Relying as much on experimentation as on traditional crafting techniques, Anna is always looking for ways to stretch the knitting medium into new territories. Anna’s one-of-a-kind knitted toys have been shown at galleries around the US and in Tokyo. "Greetings from Mochimochi" will be her first solo show.

A Year of Giving - May - Fixation Picc Line Cover

For May, Carly in our office suggested I make a PICC Line Cover in Fixation Splash. PICC stands for Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter - a long IV line that is inserted in the arm and ends in a vein the chest near the heart. These are intended for long-term use for delivering medications, chemotherapy or other IV fluids. The exposed part of the line should be covered when not in use. What is provided to cover the PICC line is usually not very comfortable or durable. Hand knit covers are a great alternative because they are comfortable and look more like a knit accessory than a medical dressing. Many hospitals will accept these. One organization that is distributing PICC line covers to medical centers for Cystic Fibrosis is The Finding Jenn Project . Fixation is a DK weight blend of cotton with just a hint of spandex.
