Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival Update

Getting ready to head off to Pittsburgh, PA (if it doesn't snow too much more so we can't get there) later this week for the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival.  We are giving away 600 hat patterns and 1200 skeins of Cascade 220!  The first 300 participants each day will get a ticket to redeem at our booth for a Lorna Miser hat pattern (designed for the Festival) and the 2 skeins of Cascade 220 needed to make the hat.  Randy Grossman, former Steelers' tight end, will be at the Cascade Yarns table that will be located in the the pre-funcation area on both days at 1 pm to sign autographs.

On Sunday, there is a wearable art fashion show and luncheon that is benefitting Casting for Recovery (Breast Cancer awareness group).  The Confluence of Artistry and Math exhibit will be a special treat - there are many submissions from heads of Math departments that knit and show the correlation of the two.  The exhibit is free with admission both days.

Melissa Leapman is the 2010 Special Guest Teacher and will be teaching four classes over the weekend - Cable Ready, Knitting on the Edge:  Beautiful Borders, Mosaic Knitting:  Colorful Knitting the Easy Way, and Celtic Cables.  They are offering a $5 discount per class if someone signs up for all four classes.  Melissa is an amazing teacher and this would be a great opportunity to learn a new technique.

  1. We had 2 feet of snow over the weekend and all roads leading to the hotel are clear and dry. The forecast is for an additional 2-4, 3-6, ending Wednesday and it will be like a dusting compared to what we had. Everyone deserves a break from all the shoveling, come out and play with some yarn!

Honeycomb Cable Hat - Greenland

I got the brilliant idea this year to knit a number of people gifts.  I managed to finish 6 projects in the month of December and write out the patterns for most of them.  One of my favorites was this lovely cabled hat knit in Greenland .  Greenland is one of my favorite yarns - it has this amazing springy twists and has fabulous stitch definition.  Sadly, I seem to never get a chance to knit it. The finished hat shown is for an average adult - finished (unstretched) measurement is 7" wide and 8" long from the cast on edge.  I cast on 88 stitches.  It can easily be adapted to be smaller (cast on 80 stitches) or larger (cast on 96 stitches). Materials: (1), 1, (2) ball Greenland (100% Superwash Merino Wool - 137 yds/100 g) - shown in color 3549 US 7 - 16" circular needles US 9 - 16" circular needles Cable needle (or spare DPN) Stitch Marker Abbrevations K - Knit P - Purl cn - cable needle Sl - slip 4-st RC - Sl 2 st...
